With my Background in Biochemistry; the integrated way that systems work fascinated me from the beginning. Environmental Biochemistry became my main focus, and the fact that I could understand the health implications of working on the human body really made me passionate about my career choice in HSE (Health, Safety and Environment) I love my career choice and have been working as a Consultant for over 2.5 years now. Although I am aware that I do not have extensive years in the field, I think that this is compensated by the fact that I am dedicated and that during this time I have gained insight and experience into the many different functionalities of Health, Safety and Environmental Management. In addition to this, my involvement in Off-Shore work has led me into numerous fields such as Hazardous Materials Management and Waste Management.
My interest in OHS peaked when I realized there was always a simpler way to keep people safe and improve their environment without being costly on the company. Keeping up to date with the latest technology and research, I feel, is pivotal in this field as the environment and issues surrounding it change so regularly. I avidly read academic newsletters and journals. I feel that, especially in this field one needs to be self-disciplined and practical as well as have a keen eye for detail. I am capable of making good, clear judgments on topics and have always been able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
Working in South Africa was wonderful, but I felt I needed to gain international experience and awareness whilst soaking up some new cultures and languages. This led me to working in Thailand. I found that my greatest achievement arriving in Thailand was; without any understanding of the Culture, laws and regulations; was able to learn and prepare, within 3 months, for an ISO audit (Which covered Environment, Health and Safety and Quality), where it was my responsibility to re-write the manual to the current standards. I am pleased to say we passed with flying colors. Working offshore has increased my inter-cultural experiences and I really hope to continue doing that in the future.
I hope that with the skills and knowledge I have gained I will be considered an asset to the next organization I join. I take great pride in the work I do. The type of work I am looking for needs to be challenging and integrated as well as dynamic. Dealing with people is something I enjoy doing, although I am focused enough to work closely with others and not compromise my work standards. I really would like to, at this stage develop my career for the long term. I would like to eventually work towards project management in the Health, Safety and Environmental field.
As you can see by my resume, education for me is pivotal. It was why I chose to join the University of Queensland this year to improve my post graduate studies. My subjects consisted of, International Law, Occupational Health and Safety, Natural Resource Management as well as Sustainable Development. All subjects I found greatly fascinating and satisfying.
As my studies in Australia have come to an end and we (my husband and I) have now moved back to New Zealand. This leaves us open to relocate to any location.
Thank you for taking the time to Review my CV. I look forward to hearing any feedback from you.
Warmest Regards
Nicola Morrison
